Production conventions

Here are the conventions you should think about when creating a scene:

  • Aesthetics
  • Space and composition 
  • Acting 
  • technical aspects
  • Sound (initial reaction)
  • Editing 
  • narrative 
  • representation

Aesthetics - Messages/mood that is being conveyed physically through the body language of a character or characters

Space and composition - The position of objects/characters within a shot. 

Acting - When someone is portraying a character in the story, who's job is to use emotion and body language written in the script to tell a story. 

Technical aspects - How equipment is set up to match the scene appropriately. This includes cameras setting up at a specific angle.  

Sound - This can be sound effects, Diegetic and non-diegetic music. Anything that can be heard coming from the film/Tv episode. There's a lot of categories for sound, these are just some of the few. 

Editing - Cutting sections and putting clips together. Editing is the way the movie/Tv episode is made. 

Narrative - Narrative is the way the story is told. Generally stories are told in three sections from beginning to end. 

Representation - This is involves mirroring certain traits that are found in our society and including communities to give a idea of what that group is like.
