Investigating audio production

When filming a scene in a movie one of the most important things to think about is sound. It is such an important aspect to think about. Sound is how we communicate and is used as dialogue to inform the audience what is happening in a scene. Sound can also create music which sparks emotion. As humans the first sense we develop is hearing. Around 18 weeks babies hear their first sounds, so we're able to hear before visualising things.

Diegetic:

Diegetic is sound/music that's being made in the universe of the scene. Audio in the scene being heard by the characters. This is sound effects of characters interacting with objects. For example, if someone in the scene we're to drop a mug, that mug would have a sound added for it hitting the floor; Everyone in that scene can hear that mug falling and is now part of the story.

Non-Diegetic:

Sound/music/voice that's being made for the scene. Which has been added on top. This is like soundtracks and narration. Anything that the character can't hear in the story and is recorded over the scene.

External Diegetic sound:

Sound which all the characters in the scene can hear. This is dialogue and explosions as well as simple sound effects form objects.

Internal Diegetic sound:

Sound which only one character in the scene can hear. This could be voices in that character's head or a sound effect. In a lot of movies characters often have ringing sounds going off after a gun has been shot near them.

This is a scene from a movie called guardians of the galaxy which uses Diegetic sounds coming from a character's headphones which eventually transitions in to a non - diegetic music. You may need to watch this on YouTube so here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i2oUp5fAQw

Panning

What is panning? (definition)

Panning means swivelling a still camera horizontally from a fixed position. Similar to how someone moves their neck to turn their head.

This doesn't have to only happen through video. This can also happen with sound, When recording for a stereo sound you can pan the movement of the sound so that it's different through each ear piece of a headphone. This can make the experience when listening very realistic.

Number 4 in the image is panning

Here is an example of what panning movement with sound feels like. (wear headphones)

Creating music for a game trailer

I've chosen to make a track to go with the need for speed game trailer out of the three games given to us. I've chose this game trailer because I think it would fit the style of music I'd want to make, which is fast paced and heavy hitting with the bass. I feel like with this video I can create a gritty electric guitar type track to help the visuals look more lively. Because the game is quite modern and the trailer switches quite quickly between shots the music I think this could work quite well. This is how it went.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how I made the music and how well it worked with the visuals.

How I made the audio?

I made the audio in GarageBand using the loop browser tool located in the top right of the app.

After clicking this there would be a filter where you could set what genre and/or instruments you wanted to use. Each one would play a short looped song. For the Need for speed trailer I filtered my instruments to electric guitars as well as the future bass genre.

I also added in a drummer in to my track. By tight clicking on a new track slot and clicking add drummer I could click an icon in the top right called Library Y.

This would allow me to select what kind of drummer I wanted to add. I went for Big room EDM Magnus which ended up working really well with the track. What ended up being made from the track was a gritty low bass track. Something that I think sums up the Need for speed franchise quite well.

For my film festival I think the loop browser will become a crucial tool. Because me and my group partner Louis are recreating a scene from the movie Halloween we want to create a scary menacing atmosphere. Especially since it is the scene where the killer scares a student in her back garden. Overall I found it quite easy using this tool and I can't wait to make a horror themed track.
